Summer Institute on “World History: The Social and Economic Origins of the Modern World” (Master’s course: Special Study of Modern Economics and Management IV)
Instructor: Prof. Chad Denton (Yonsei University, Korea)
Date & Time: 18:15-19:45 from Monday to Friday, from July 6 to July 24 (15 lectures)
Course Goal: The “modern era” of world history is the time period when what had formerly been “an underdeveloped barbarian appendage of the Mediterranean”―Europe―came to dominate the globe. The central historical question of this course is “how did the West become the West?” To address that question, we will pursue what one scholar has described as “a non-Eurocentric explanation of a world that has European features.” That explanation–best exemplified by Kenneth Pomeranz’s “Great Divergence” thesis–emphasizes contingency, accident, conjuncture, and focuses specifically on the importance of China and India, and the commodities of silver, sugar, slaves, cotton, and opium.
* Prof. Denton is Specially-Appointed Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Economics and Business Administration, Hokkaido University from July to August, 2015. He is also recieved as a researcher at the Research Center for Regional Economy and Business.
* This course is a part of the Top Global University Project, Japan
